Our Founding

The founding of Theta Phi Alpha is a story of a group of young friends, much like the members of today. They were faced with a myriad of challenges and issues on their campus. By joining together, they provided support and friendship to one another, to meet the challenges that they faced and to create an organization that would enable future generations to share that sisterhood. We recognize the contributions of the sisters who have gone before us and acknowledge that, without them, our experience today would be very different.

Theta Phi Alpha was founded on August 30, 1912 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor by a group of Catholic women who were struggling to fit in. At the time, other sororities were not welcoming to Catholic women and our 10 Founders, under the direction of Bishop Edward D. Kelley worked tirelessly to create a place for Catholic women to go to for socialization and friendship. Since then Theta Phi Alpha has opened its doors to all faiths, and around the country promotes leadership, scholarship, friendship, and sisterhood. This year, we celebrate 100 years since the founding of Theta Phi Alpha!

Chapter History

The Beta Nu Chapter of Theta Phi Alpha was founded at Florida Atlantic University on November 23, 1991 making it the first Panhellenic sorority on FAU’s campus. Beta Nu began as the local sorority Nu Gamma Phi and became a colony of Theta Phi Alpha on February 3, 1991. The women of Nu Gamma Phi selected Theta Phi Alpha because they believed the ideals of both organizations were alike. They also favored the friendly response from Theta Phi Alpha and ability to remain somewhat independent. After a semester of hard work and devotion, they were approved for installation by the Grand Council and commemorated this special event with a ceremony on campus followed by a formal at the Deerfield Beach Hilton.

After 21 years the presence and devotion of our sisters continues to spread across the University. Promoting our own values of leadership, scholarship, friendship, and sisterhood the Beta Nu Chapter at Florida Atlantic University continues to build stronger sisters and shape women into dynamic leaders.
